Provisionally Cast On using Crochet Method

This video will show you how to work a provisional cast on. This is a temporary cast on where you will be able to undo your cast on stitches later on, to continue knitting with or grafting onto another knit piece. You will need a crochet hook and waste yarn to work this cast on.

This is the easiest provisional cast-on!

Materials required:

  • scrap yarn;

  • crochet hook - size similar to your knitting needle size, but not essential;

  • knitting needles.

Using scrap yarn, provisionally cast on the desired number of stitches (sts) in the following way:

Make a slip knot using scrap yarn and place it on the crochet hook. Hold the crochet hook in your right hand and your knitting needle in your left hand. Place your knitting needle in front of the scrap yarn — the scrap yarn is now under or behind the knitting needle. With the crochet hook, reach over the knitting needle and hook the scrap yarn. Pull the yarn through the slip knot on the hook. You will now have your first provisional st on the knitting needle.

*Place the scrap yarn behind the needle. Reach over the knitting needle with the crochet hook, grab the yarn and pull the yarn through the loop on the hook*. Repeat from * to * until you have the desired number of sts on the knitting needle.

Once you have the correct number of sts on the knitting needle, crochet 6 more sts as follows: wrap the yarn around the crochet hook and pull yarn through the loop on the hook.
